How to handle sales objections in real time

By George Muchiri Wanjii26 July 20266 min read

Objections aren't rejections — they're requests for a reason to say yes. The reps who close aren't the ones who never hear objections; they're the ones who answer them calmly, in the moment, without fumbling. Here's a framework, and the four objections you'll hear most.

The universal move: acknowledge, ask, answer

Whatever the objection, resist the urge to launch straight into a rebuttal. Instead:

  1. Acknowledge it so they feel heard: "That's fair — a lot of teams weigh that up."
  2. Ask one question to understand the real concern: "Is it the upfront cost, or the cost versus the alternative?"
  3. Answer the specific thing they actually care about — not the generic version.

This turns a confrontation into a conversation, and buys you two seconds to think.

The four objections you'll hear most

1. "It's too expensive."

Reframe cost as value or risk. Anchor to the outcome ("what does one lost deal cost you?"), or to the cost of doing nothing. If you have a real number — an annual price, an ROI figure, a discount — say it precisely. Vagueness reads as weakness.

2. "You're more expensive than [competitor]."

Never rubbish the competitor. Acknowledge them, then move to the axis where you win: "They're solid. The difference people pick us for is X." Have your battlecard facts ready — the specific, honest differences.

3. "Now's not a good time."

Usually a priority objection, not a calendar one. Gently surface the cost of waiting: "Totally understand — what would need to change for this to be worth prioritising?" You're testing whether it's a real timing issue or a soft no.

4. "Just send me some info."

The polite brush-off. Agree — then attach a small commitment: "Happy to. So I send the right thing, what's the one outcome you'd need this to prove?" Now the follow-up has a hook instead of vanishing into an inbox.

The hard part: doing it under pressure

Knowing the framework is easy on paper. The problem is the live call, where a sharp question makes newer reps freeze — they fumble, promise to "follow up," and the momentum's gone. This is exactly the moment a meeting co-pilot earns its place: it hears the objection, pulls the right answer from your own battlecards, and puts it on screen in about a second — so you sound like your best rep on every call, not just your good days.

Freezing on an objection costs deals. The fix isn't more scripts to memorise — it's the right answer, in front of you, when you need it.
